Jamie Bailey of Brodequin on New Album, Lyric & Everything In Between

METAL MARCH - The Brutal Death Metal (BDM) giant Brodequin announce their comeback at October 2015 after hiatus in a long time. And Metal March have this special opportunity to interview the vocalist and bassist Jamie Bailey about their activity at that time away, music, lyric, and everything in between. Don't miss every single words.

Metal March: It is an honour to do interview with you, Jamie. Thank you so much. So, how are you doing?

Brodequin: Thank you very much! I am doing well hopefully you are too.

Terima kasih banyak! Saya baik-baik saja, semoga Anda juga begitu.

Metal March: Brodequin is coming back after hiatus in such a long time. At that time, what are you and other members doing by the way?

Brodequin: Well we all had different things we were involved in whether it was music or family and jobs. Speaking for myself during the time away I always knew that I wanted to get back involved when I had the chance. There were several personal things that happened during the down time that took quite a while to overcome and get my head back into the right frame of mind.

Metal March: Since the passion for music is eternal for us human, is that the main reason you guys decide to bring back Brodequin into the scene?

Brodequin: Music truly is passion and I knew I would always be involved in music on some level. During the time away from Brodequin when I was playing bass, it was primarily jazz and it kept me wanting to write Brodequin material. I also was keeping an eye on the scene to see what was out there and what type of bands were making a difference in the underground. The main reason I can say that I wanted to bring it back was that I missed performing music that we created. There is a real connection between the artists and the fans, I always considered our fans as friends. I missed creating music and missed our friends, it was something that I felt I had to do.

Metal March: The news about Brodequin's comeback is huge, and BDM fans look forward to Brodequin materials after a long time. As for now, are you guys composing songs?

Brodequin: The response from the BDM fans has been very big and surprising to me. I feel very honored to have so many people that are looking forward to seeing us and hearing new music. We have mainly been working on getting our old material back in playing condition. There have been a few guitar riffs that we played around with a little bit and I have written lyrics for 4 songs so far.

Metal March:  Can you give us assurance that Brodequin will release the fourth full-length?

Brodequin: Thats the plan at this point. Like I mentioned so far I have 4 songs lyrically complete and after we have our set list all finished we will begin writing new music. We are all looking forward to the new material and still think we have a lot that we want to do in the world of BDM.

Metal March: So, are there any differences with the old Brodequin? I heard that Brodequin will use drum machine for the upcoming material/album.

Brodequin: No we are not using a drum machine. I think there has been a lot of confusion about this. Jon has some issues with his back and everyone knows the guy can play drums and is very talented.. However due to the injury he has had to find another way to perform. He is playing on a type of pad system, nothing is programmed and he will be performing on this live. Its all responsive, so the harder he hits it then the louder the sound. All the sounds are actual drum sounds that have been sampled and setup by Jon.

Metal March: Brodequin fans is anxious that drum machine will change Brodequin drastically, because Brodequin known as the rawest band ever. Can you explain to us about this?

Brodequin: I will say that we all agreed if it sounded bad, or took away anything from the feeling of Brodequin that we wouldn’t have decided to do it. That is something we discussed before we ever even tried a rehearsal. I was very impressed with what he has been able to accomplish using the current setup, and Jon is a great guy to write music with. Thats a big part of it as well, you can get a drummer or a bassist or whatever, but to get a good connection when writing can be a challenge. Once the writing process officially begins I foresee it going smoothly and quickly, because we all work so well together.

Metal March: Brodequin always has this unique perspectives about lyric (history, medieval torture, etc). Where did you get the references?

Brodewquin: I was always a huge fan of world history mainly during the medieval era. My interest began as a child and I would try and find any information I could on anything related to the medieval time period. As I grew older I decided to enter a University specializing in history and being Mike and I always were into music it seemed like a natural fit. All my references come from books that I own, I have basically a small library of books related to medieval history, religious texts, judicial practices, wars, etc. I still spend a lot of time reading, which is were all of the lyrics and imagery inspiration comes from. In respect to Indonesia I have always enjoyed Wayang Kulit, the history of many of the tribal conflicts and the study of Pentjak Silat and the rich history of bladed weapons that are unique to Indonesia.

Saya selalu menjadi penggemar sejarah dunia terutama era pertengahan.

Metal March: Brodequin is a top notch at BDM scene and a lot of bands out there who influenced by Brodequin. Can you tell us about Brodequin's musical influences?

Brodequin: We all have such different influences, and many in common of course in regards specifically to BDM. Speaking for myself I started back with Morbid Angel, Obituary, Cannibal Corpse, and then got into bands like Disgorge, Deranged, Dead Infection, Last Days of Humanity, Aborted, Gorgasm, etc. Those guys I thought were really pushing what death metal was going to be. I wanted to be on the same level as all the bands that I respected, its the same today. There are a lot of new bands that are really turning out some quality music and that pushes me to create better music than I have in the past.

Kami masing-masing memiliki influence yang berbeda, tapi banyak yang serupa terutama BDM. Saya mulanya suka Morbid Angel, Obituary, Cannibal Corpse, kemudian menuju ke band-band seperti Disgorge, Deranged, Dead infection, Last Days of Humanity, Aborted, Gorgasm, dan seterusnya.

Metal March: What more can we expect from Brodequin in 2016? What are your future goals for the band?

Brodequin: We are just getting back into performing and have some really great appearances lined up in 2016. I look forward to seeing all of our friends after so long. New material will be available in some kind of form whether its a full length or an EP we will see. I think we all agree that new music is our main goal in 2016 and we are really looking forward to releasing it.

Metal March: Unmatched Brutality Records (UBR) also back to the scene. Is it hard for you being in band and also run a label?

Brodequin: Well Mike still runs the label I just work on helping with orders, the website and any packaging design that will come up in the future. I think it works pretty well with being in a band and having the label. It exposes us to a lot of bands that we may not get to hear so soon because they become part of the catalog shortly after their release.
It also helps us build contacts with a lot of bands/labels around the world that enables us to get our music into more peoples hands.

Metal March: Are there any specific terms & conditions to any band who would like to get signed by UBR?

Brodequin: No I don’t think so, just send your best material. I think 3 songs is good enough, it doesn’t have to e a full length or anything for a submission.

Metal March: How do you see the metal scene in digital age today? Is it good or bad such as downloading singles and the work of social media?

Brodequin: This is an interesting question on one hand its never been better to be involved in music. People all over the world can hear your music as soon as its released expanding your fan base and increasing your popularity in a very short amount of time with minimal effort. On the other hand once you post something online its not your anymore, and it can be taken by anyone. So I think you have to have the online exposure, you just need to realize that people will steal you music and there is nothing you can do about it.

Metal March: Do you guys know a thing or two about Indonesia metal scene? (There are so many Brodequin's fans here, I think you already know that). How could you describe that?

Brodequin: Indonesia extreme scene today? The Indonesian scene look huge! I am shocked by the amount of bands that are in Indonesia, and not just bands but really good bands! I have seen some pictures from a few festivals there and they look insane! And yes I am aware that there are a lot of Brodequin fans in Indonesia which we are very thankful for!

Skena ekstrem Indonesia? Skena Indonesia terlihat sangat besar!
